Although located in the heart of the city, the abbey is situated atop a hill and isolated from the rest of the town. It takes its name from the herd of sheep that grazes on its grounds, rather than from the gloomy atmosphere reminiscent of the film The Silence of the Lambs.
After taking care to avoid any potential sheepdogs, we entered the building. Unfortunately, time and a fire have left only the walls standing. However, a staircase remains, allowing access to the top of the building. From up there, it is difficult to distinguish the structure, which is overgrown with trees, bushes, and climbing plants.
The view of the surrounding area must have been magnificent, but the clouds and fog made it impossible to see far into the distance. On our way back down, we discovered a network of tunnels under the abbey! Some seemed to extend for long distances, perhaps to allow escape in case of siege?
However, we left through the entrance, leaving behind the remains of the building. It was now a shadow of its former self. An aura of mystery hung behind us, fading into the October fog.
